History of Pencil


The first use of pencil in the United States was in 1795 when John Inverarity in Edinburgh started using a pencil to write his notes for a new schoolteacher. 


In 1796, my own John Inverarity, with the help of his father, started using a pencil to write articles for a new paper, the Edinburgh Herald. I was not born until 1796 so I cannot claim to have been first in the use of pencil, but I am sure that it was not an un-traditional use.


The use of pencil spread rapidly in other countries too. In Russia, for example, pencil use was common during the 17th century.
